American manufacturer Ford, will work in partnership with Transport for London (TfL) providing TfL and a range of companies 20 PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Engine Vehicle) Transit vans.

The idea is to test their impact on emissions and monitor their performance in urban conditions, the toughest environment by far.

The van, still in development, should have a range of 31 miles purely on electric.

Graham Hoare, director of global vehicle evaluation and verification at Ford, recognises: “there is no point creating a product vehicle fleets don’t want, so the trial will play a critical role in refining its development, with a final version pencilled for launch in 2019.”

The test will focus on two key challenges: Wholelife costs and Usability.

The programme is supported by a £4.7m grand from the leading research institution: the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC)
